Six-hit Thornton make title statement

With this weekend marking the return of the Lancashire Amateur Shield, Saturday saw a reduced, yet action-packed, schedule of league fixtures writes BEN SMITH with pictures from Hawcoat Park v Freckleton by PAUL HUNT.

In one of two Premier Division matches, Thornton Cleveleys registered an impressive 6-1 win at Cleator Moor Celtic, with Stuart Dagger and Danny Fryer both scoring twice.

Lewis Walmsley and John Frazer also netted in the win, whilst the hosts’ only goal came via Kieran Maguire.

Elsewhere, Whitehaven beat Milnthorpe Corinthians 2-1, with Kian Goulding and Josh Hilton finding the net before Dan Taylor halved the deficit just before the hour.

The stand-out result in Division One saw Crooklands Casuals win 8-2 at Southport Hesketh, led by a four-goal haul from Ryan Rodgers.

Hadley Tunstall got two, whilst Morgan Taylor and Luke Armstrong were also on target for the visitors.

Southport Hesketh’s goals, meanwhile, came via Jordan Slade’s fourth minute opener and a strike from Paul Simms.

All three of Saturday’s Division One fixtures ended in an away victory, with Lytham Town the second in a trio of teams to take maximum points on the road.

Lochlan Best, Jimmy McPhee, Kian Kelly and Alan Greenwood all netted in a 4-2 win at Chipping, whose goals came via Harris Bailey and Joe Melling.

Meanwhile, Millom won 3-1 at Croston Sports, thanks to Theo Wilson’s opener and a brace from Phil Edmondson, which included a goal from the spot.

Adam Stammers pulled one back for the hosts late on.

Freckleton maintained their advantage at the top of Division Two, with goals from Ryan Thompson, Macauley Hopkins and Keifer Cunningham sealing a 3-1 win at Hawcoat Park, who got their only goal through Matthew Roberts.

Second-placed Walney Island also took all three points this weekend, triumphing 2-1 over Charnock Richard Reserves in dramatic fashion.

Zach Walker’s opener was cancelled out by Owen Green, before Hayden Skyrme struck in the 92nd minute to restore his side’s lead and ultimately secure the win.

And Garstang Reserves are up to fourth, with goals from Luke Barmby, Rory Walmsley and Lewis Heap sealing a 3-1 victory over Dalton United, who registered a late consolation through Jordan Chubb.

Euxton Villa Reserves beat Kendal United 3-2, as Thomas Henderson, James Hale and Jacob Greenhalgh struck to secure victory, despite Jonny Voortman’s fifth-minute opener and a second-half leveller from Marco Thompson.

And in the final Division Two fixture, AFC Blackpool Reserves and Stoneclough played out a 1-1 draw, with Danny Sumner’s early opener cancelled out by Kieran Parker.

Fulwood Amateurs Reserves retained top spot in Division One Reserve, with goals from Christian Bolton and Alex Smithson sealing a 2-1 comeback victory at Thornton Cleveleys Reserves, who had led through Billy Cartmell.

It’s Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves now second, after a quickfire double from Olly Hesford and Liam Wenman secured a 2-0 win against Rossendale Reserves.

That spot had previously been occupied by Coppull Reserves, before they were beaten 4-2 in what was an impressive away victory for Eagley Reserves.

And it was goals galore too at Hurst Green Reserves, who triumphed 6-3 over Lostock St Gerards Reserves as Nick Hepple hit a hat-trick, Daniel Mort scored twice and Matthew Bagot also found the net.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves’ goals, meanwhile, came via Adam Whittaker, Damien Green and Ben Rixon.

Elsewhere, CMB Reserves beat Tempest United Reserves 2-1, with Lewis Cullen converting a penalty before Harry Dixon doubled the advantage.

Tempest United Reserves then halved the deficit via an own goal on the hour.

Finally, we move into Division Two Reserve, where Ben Davies, Jordan Wignall and Charlie Simmons each scored twice as Croston Sports Reserves moved up to second with a 7-3 win at Lytham Town Reserves.

Jamie Lynch also netted in the win, whilst Cameron Palmer, Michael Brent and Liam Sinclair were the scorers for the hosts.

However, it’s Haslingden St Mary’s Reserves who continue to top the division, with late goals from Matthew Martindale and Jordan Henderson sealing a 2-0 win at Rossendale A.

Fulwood Amateurs A also won on the road, with goals from Max Botes and Dylan Jackson-Cooney sandwiching a Jack Dickinson double in a 4-2 triumph at Hesketh Bank Reserves.

Zaman Rezaei and Morgan Shephard got the goals for the hosts.

Tom Shaw cancelled out Anthony Slater’s sixth-minute opener as Milnthorpe Corinthians Reserves and Chipping Reserves drew 1-1, whilst the points were also shared between Carnforth Rangers Reserves and Storeys Reserves.

Josh Hadwin and Ricardo Mwale were on target for Carnforth Rangers Reserves, whilst Isaac Fenton and Tom Charlson netted for Storeys Reserves as the two sides played out a 2-2 draw.

And wrapping up this round-up of the weekend’s league action are Thornton Cleveleys A, who won 2-1 at Freckleton Reserves to inflict a first home defeat of the season on their hosts.
