Fixtures changed to avoid M6 closure problems

By Andy Sykes

Some matches on this Saturday's fixture list have been changed amid concerns over travelling on the M6.

The motorway will be shut between Junction 33 at Galgate, south of Lancaster and junction 32, at Broughton, near Preston from 9pm on Friday night to 5am on Monday.

It is part of a series of planned weekend closures which will also affect motorists on September 23-26 and September 30-October 3.

Clubs had expressed concerns they may not be able to reach away matches due to the M6 closures, which this weekend has seen delays of more than three hours according to reports.

Fixtures Secretary Andy Hosker has juggled as many fixtures as possible to avoid players and officials having to use logjammed alternative routes north of Preston.

In an email to clubs, he said: "Several clubs have asked about the M6 nightmare and the likelihood that it’ll continue for the next three weekends.

"I’ve tried to avoid travelling on M6 between Lancaster/ Preston.

"Please note the week after, Sept 24, is mainly out of my control, I have absolutely no input regarding the County Cup fixtures and whilst I haven’t really looked at the 24th yet, I’m happy to listen to suggestions for remaining West Lancashire League games on this date."

Richardson Cup first round matches have been moved to October 15.

National Highways is working on renewing the waterproofing and surface on the bridges which carry the M6 over Whittingham Lane and Stubbins Lane, north of junction 32.
