Minute's silence to honour Queen and league stalwart

Clubs are requested to hold a minute's silence before their West Lancashire League matches tomorrow to show respect to the late Queen and the league's Stuart Ashworth.

Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8 aged 96. The FA postponed all grassroots fixtures last Saturday as a mark of respect. Her Majesty's funeral will be held on Monday.

Stuart Ashworth was the league's honorary vice president who passed away just a week after the death of his wife.

Hon General Secretary John Brown said: "The president, chairman, committee and member clubs pass on their condolences to the family of Stuart plus Poulton FC who he was a member of for many years.

"Stuart was a member of the league for many years as was his father before him. He was league treasury until the period he stepped down.

"During his time with the league he saw many changes and helped the league to manage these changes.

"He still showed a keen interest in how the league was progressing after he stepped down."

Clubs are asked to a hold a minute's silence tomorrow before their 3pm kick offs to honour both Her Majesty and Mr Ashworth.

Mr Ashworth's funeral - and that of his late wife - will be held at St Chad's Church in Poulton on Thursday September 22 at 12.15pm.
