Easter and May fixtures to combat wretched weather

The West Lancashire League 2023/24 season is set to be extended into May due to a record number of postponements post-Covid.

Fixtures are being planned for May 4 with some games scheduled for Easter Saturday (March 30) and Easter Monday (April 1).

In the Premier Division, which is the worst affected, Wyre Villa still have 17 league games still to play while Burscough Richmond and Coppull United have 14 respectively.

On the flip side, Whitehaven only have seven league matches left.

Cup semi-finals and finals still have to be factored in to the calendar with more postponements expected due to the unceasing weather.

There have been a total of 228 matches postponed this season, almost all due to weather conditions. A small number of others were due to clubs not being able to fulfil matches.

The number of games postponed this season has already surpassed the total for 2021/22 and 2022/23.

POSTPONED MATCHES
2021/22 – 226 games postponed
2022/23 – 205 games postponed
2023/24 – 228 games postponed (as of February 21).

Fixtures secretary Andy Hosker said: “I’ve managed to plan games for a final league fixture day of May 4 when eight Premier Division matches are planned (only 1 Premier Div team doesn’t have a game on May 4).

“This might have to extend to May 11 very soon.”

Other leagues are also countering similar problems and the Ebac Northern League - which operates at the same level as the North West Counties League - has written to the FA to request an extension to the season.

The league said it has “serious concerns about the ability of some clubs to complete their fixtures.”

In the North West Counties League, Charnock Richard still have 20 league matches to play with the regular league season due to end on April 20.
