Tempest up to fourth as Bank cash in

Tempest United and Hesketh Bank's decision to switch to 3G pitches paid dividends as they each enjoyed three welcome points, writes BEN SMITH with pictures from Thornton Cleveleys v Vickerstown by ANDY BRADSHAW.

Another weekend brought another battle with the elements for sides across the West Lancashire League, with just five matches played amidst the latest round of wet weather.

But whilst the volume of games was down, there was still drama and goals aplenty in those which did survive.

Premier Division: Thornton Cleveleys claim big win

In one of two Premier Division ties played out this weekend, Thornton Cleveleys registered a notable result as they beat Vickerstown 5-1.

Thornton Cleveleys took the lead inside three minutes through Jake Mangan, only to be pegged back just 10 minutes later thanks to a goal from Vickerstown’s Jackson Round.

A Richard Wright penalty would make it 2-1, before a Lewis Walmsley brace and David Cartmell strike put the icing on the win for Thornton Cleveleys.

Elsewhere, a spirited comeback saw Tempest United rally to beat Blackpool Wren Rovers 3-2 in a game switched to a 3G pitch to combat the current conditions.

Ryan Willetts and John Hay both netted inside the opening quarter of an hour for Blackpool Wren Rovers, giving their side an early 2-0 lead.

However, goals from Tom Booth, Elliot Hailwood and Jordan Pendlebury would complete the turnaround and hand Tempest United all three points.

Division One: Hesketh Bank cash in on postponements elsewhere

Hesketh Bank are back on top of Division One after Saturday’s matches, and they returned to the summit in style with a 5-0 win against Kendal County.

In another match switched to 3G, Luke Smith opened the scoring, before James Hanson and Kevin Edgar both bagged braces.

Hesketh Bank’s victory came as fellow title challengers Rossendale and Lostock St Gerards both had games called off, and the latter pair will have the chance to leapfrog the leaders once more should they pick up points in their games in hand.

Meanwhile, Croston Sports also picked up an impressive result as they won 4-0 at Crooklands Casuals.

Dion Holden started and rounded off the scoring, his latter goal coming from the penalty spot, whilst Ryan Fletcher and Niall Maloney also got on the scoresheet.

Stewart Rowe Memorial Cup: Fulwood Amateurs Reserves fired into round two

In the only cup clash completed on Saturday, Fulwood Amateurs Reserves secured safe passage to the second round of the Stewart Rowe Memorial Cup as a 5-1 victory saw them past Hesketh Bank Reserves.
