Fabulous Freck and awesome Astley in big cupsets

This weekend’s West Lancashire League schedule saw the various cup competitions dominate the billing, accompanied by a sprinkling of league action writes BEN SMITH with pictures from Coppull v Blackpool Wren Rovers by JOHN SHIRRAS.

Richardson Cup: Wilkes’ wizardry sees Freckleton stun Lostock St Gerards

In what was arguably the standout result of Saturday’s Richardson Cup 3rd round action, Division Two side Freckleton won 4-3 at Division One outfit Lostock St Gerards.

Zach Wilkes was the visitors’ star performer as he grabbed a hat-trick, with Jordan Wilder also finding the net for Freckleton.

Oliver Evans’ brace for Lostock St Gerards had helped his side recover from two down, and a late Ryan Salmon goal may have sparked thoughts of a repeat, but Freckleton saw out the remaining minutes to advance to the quarter finals.

Turton also won 4-3 on the road as they eliminated Hurst Green thanks to goals from Sam Rigby, Dylan Jeffs and two from Ricardo Pembele.

Daniel Mort also bagged a double for Hurst Green, including one from the spot, whilst Jordan Monk got the hosts’ other goal.

Scott Wylie starred in Rossendale’s 6-1 triumph at Charnock Richard Reserves, as he sealed a hat-trick to go with goals from Tom Hartley, Luke Simpson and Henry Hindle.

Muhammad Butt got the hosts’ only goal.

Liam Breslin and Joe Wareing netted either side of two Reece Pearce goals as Slyne with Hest beat Kendal United 4-1.

Bailey Kenny was the goalscorer for Kendal United.

And there was yet another double for Dylan Winstanley and CMB, who saw off Vickerstown 2-0.

Rounding off the Richardson Cup action, Tempest United won 2-1 at Fulwood Amateurs.

Sam Parkinson scored twice for the visitors, whilst Fulwood Amateurs’ goal came through Matt Van Wyk.

Presidents Cup: Brilliant Astley and Buckshaw in shock shoot-out success

There was a significant upset in the first round of Presidents Cup on Saturday, with Division 2 side Astley and Buckshaw eliminating Premier Division high-flyers Burscough Richmond on penalties.

The underdogs appeared to be slipping to a narrow defeat, with Burscough Richmond leading 1-0 heading into the final moments of the game thanks to Ade Kirkbride’s goal in the opening minute.

However, Jordan Mitchell would level the score in the 96th minute to force a shoot-out, and Astley and Buckshaw would hold their nerve from 12 yards to seal a memorable win.

Milnthorpe Corinthians also progressed on penalties following a 1-1 draw as they defeated Askam United.

Askam United had led at half-time through Joe Tindale, but Milnthorpe Corinthians would find a way back into the tie via a Taylor Fagan equaliser, before going on to secure victory on spot kicks.

Elsewhere, Thornton Cleveleys beat Walney Island 3-1 thanks to goals from Oliver Wilkinson, Archie Lang and Jake Mangan.
James Bailey netted what would prove to be a consolation for Walney Island late on.

And in the final Presidents Cup tie of the weekend, Poulton saw off AFC Blackpool Reserves 2-1.

Aaron Fleming opened the scoring for Poulton after 13 minutes, but would see his goal cancelled out by Nathan Feeney.

However, Josh Smith would restore Poulton’s advantage just before the break with what would prove to be the match winner.

Challenge Cup: Dalton United dance into round two

Division Two side Dalton United secured safe passage from the first round of the Challenge Cup, beating Division One’s Hawcoat Park 4-0.

Robbie Sanderson scored twice, whilst Robbie McMurdo and Gareth Jones also found the net.

Meanwhile, Stoneclough survived a Chris Stripp-led Galgate rally to advance to the next round with a 4-2 win.

Stoneclough were 3-0 up after just 21 minutes thanks to goals from Jack Potter, Ben Marshall and Josh Hill, but Stripp’s double would reduce the deficit to one with two minutes plus second-half stoppage time still to play.

However, Ben Marshall would add Stoneclough’s fourth just two minutes later to end any thought of an unlikely comeback win.

A Joey Blackshaw brace helped Crooklands Casuals win 3-0 at Southport Hesketh, that after Nathan Shaw had opened the scoring for the away side.

And Millom also progressed by a 3-0 scoreline, with a Chris O’Brien goal and Theo Wilson double securing a home victory over Pause United.

The final three Challenge Cup ties were all settled on penalties, with the standout of those ties seeing Carnforth Rangers fight from 2-0 down to ultimately progress at the expense of Croston Sports.

Croston Sports were two up after just 10 minutes thanks to goals from Joel Lloyd and Harvey Parker, but Tom Knight and Stan Rich would have Carnforth Rangers level before the break.

The game would finish level at 2-2, with Carnforth Rangers ultimately securing victory in the resulting shootout.

Division One leaders Hesketh Bank are also through, eventually seeing off Division Two side Storeys on penalties after their tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Storeys did take the lead via Matthew Poole, but Hesketh Bank would strike back through Tom Smyth, before going on to win on spot kicks.

Kendal County were the final side to survive the ‘lottery’ of penalties, as they held their nerve to beat Ulverston Rangers.

The tie went to penalties with the sides level at 1-1, after Aaron McMinn’s 11th minute opener was cancelled out late on by Ulverston Rangers’ Chris Wraighte.

But Kendal County would ensure all that time leading the game was not in vain as they secured the win from 12 yards.

Premier Division: Points all round in Premier Division

Just two games took place in the Premier Division, with both ending in 1-1 draws.

Jordan Lorde’s goal secured a point for Coppull United after Jacob Aspinall had netted the opener less than two minutes into their clash with Blackpool Wren Rovers, whilst Kian Kelly swiftly cancelled out Zach Adeyo’s 72nd minute strike as Lytham Town and Wyre Villa shared the spoils.

Division Two: Burnley United prove four-midable opponents

A brace from Joe Rodriquez helped Burnley United record a 4-0 victory over Cartmel, with Liam Cole and Harris Tomlinson also finding the net.

Meanwhile, Sean Elliot also netted twice, the latter coming from the penalty spot, as Euxton Villa Reserves won 3-1 at Garstang Reserves.

Xavier Green joined Elliot on the scoresheet for the visitors, whilst Andrew Murphy got Garstang Reserves’ only goal.

Division One Reserve: Flying Fulwood Amateurs Reserves win big again

Fulwood Amateurs Reserves followed up a remarkable 9-0 win last weekend with another sizable victory this time out, as they beat Horwich St Mary’s Victoria Reserves 5-0.

Joe Collins, Josh Taylor and James Sidebottom all found the net, before an own goal and a Sam Higham penalty completed the scoring.

Elsewhere in the Division, it was a battle of the braces as Nathan Monson and Danny Hadcraft both scored twice for their respective sides in a 2-2 draw between Tempest United Reserves and Thornton Cleveleys Reserves.

A Dan Fryer penalty and Joe Glover goal were enough to give Lostock St Gerards Reserves a 2-0 win at Turton Reserves, whilst Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves vs Poulton Reserves ended goalless.

Division Two Reserve: Goodyear stars as Haslingden St Marys Reserves smash six

Haslingden St Marys Reserves were happy on their travels this weekend, as they won 6-0 at Storeys Reserves in a game that included a hat-trick from James Goodyear.

Jack Cain, Zach Brierley and Charlie Lord also netted in the victory.

League leaders Eagley Reserves beat Carnforth Rangers Reserves 4-1, with Kieran Sissons hitting a double either side of goals from Jordan Lomax and Harry Wood.

Kyle Davis got Carnforth Rangers Reserves’ only goal of the game.

Thornton Cleveleys A and Lytham Town Reserves played out a 1-1 draw, with Logan Hunston seeing his goal cancelled out by Finlay Best.

And last but not certainly not least this week, Hesketh Bank Reserves recorded a remarkable 11-1 victory at Fulwood Amateurs A, in a game which saw Joe Smyth-Ferguson and John Ashcroft both bag hat-tricks.

Jordan Smethurst and Ian Marsden were also amongst the goals for the visitors, whilst Matthew Billington got the only goal for Fulwood Amateurs A.
