Walney shine in the sun to win battle of top two

The top and bottom of the five West Lancashire League divisions are now starting to take shape after a sun-drenched Saturday, writes BEN SMITH, with pictures of Poulton v Rossendale by DONNA ARTIS.

It’s now eight wins from eight to start the season for CMB, who increased their lead at the top of the Premier Division table to six points with victory on Saturday.

For the second game running, Carl Grimshaw and Ben Thornton scored twice in a 4-1 win, with Nick Hepple getting the only goal for this weekend’s opponents Hurst Green.

Meanwhile, Thornton Cleveleys now lead the chasing pack, up to second after Lewis Walmsley scored both goals in a 2-0 triumph over Turton.

And Fulwood Amateurs sit third after sealing a late comeback victory at Coppull United.

Taylor Brickell gave the hosts early in the second half, before Jonty McDonald levelled from the spot.

Brett McGovern would then go on to the net the winner for Fulwood in the fourth minute of time added on.

Elsewhere, Cleator Moor Celtic and Burscough Richmond also recovered from a goal down to earn maximum points, winning 4-1 and 2-1 against Wyre Villa and Lostock St Gerards respectively.

The former found themselves behind inside a minute thanks to a goal from Owen Bridge, before James Bell, Owen O’Neill, Adam Smith and Ben McCaron all found the net in what was the end a reasonably comfortable victory.

Meanwhile, a quickfire double from Jordan Lorde and Zac Aley sealed the win for Burscough, despite Olly Evans opening the scoring 11 minutes in.

Two goals from Luke Harris helped Blackpool Wren Rovers record a 4-2 victory at Whitehaven, with Ben Duffield and Alex McLoughlin also on target for the visitors.

Josh Green and George Frampton were the scorers for the home side.

And there was an away victory too for Rossendale, with Simon Nangle getting the only goal of the game as they beat Poulton 1-0.

The weekend’s final Premier Division fixture saw Milnthorpe Corinthians and Tempest United played out a 1-1 draw, with a Dan Taylor cancelling out Aaron Thorpe’s opener.

It was an eventful afternoon at the top of the Division One table, now led by Ulverston Rangers after a 4-1 win at Croston Sports.

Rangers had found themselves behind after Dion Holden opened the scoring 13 minutes in, before a Scott McDonald hat-trick, coupled with a goal from Jack Milburn, would ultimately seal three points.

Askam United are up into second, after an Aiden Pearson double helped secure a 3-1 victory over previous leaders Lytham Town.

Ben Phizakela also netted in the win, whilst Lytham’s only goal came in the form of a late Tom Bell consolation.

And it’s Eagley now in third, with Finlay Stafford helping his side triumph 6-3 in a remarkable game against Chipping.

The eventual victors trailed on three separate occasions in the first half as Harris Bailey hit a hat-trick, but each time Stafford had an answer for Bailey’s brilliance, netting a treble of his own.

Goals from Jordan Lomax, Kennedy Corvelli and Kevin Myftaraja then secured the win.

Elsewhere, there was a pair of 3-0 victories for Haslingden St Mary’s and Kendal County, who overcame Holker Old Boys Reserves and Southport Hesketh respectively.

A Rhys Barton goal and Lewis Hanley double sealed the win for Haslingden St Mary’s, whilst Jay Hayton also scored twice for Kendal County, joined on the scoresheet by Matthew Wakefield.

Carnforth Rangers, meanwhile, won 3-1 against Crooklands Casuals thanks to a Joe Jobling penalty, and goals from Cole Holt and Oliver Rickerby.

Kyle Delves got Crooklands Casuals’ only goal of the game.

And lastly in Division One, Hesketh Bank beat Millom 2-1, with Lewis Johnston and Joe Smyth-Ferguson netting either side of Jed Philip’s equaliser.

Walney Island made a significant dent into Freckelton’s advantage at the top of the Division Two table, beating the leaders 3-0 thanks to goals from Kieran Sollaway and Joe Pearson, along with a Zach Walker penalty.

And there were some big victories across the divisions on Saturday, including for third-placed Astley and Buckshaw, who beat Dalton United 5-0 thanks to goals from Scott Hammill, Jamal John, Liam Bamber, Lucas Gornall and an own goal.

Pause United scored seven at Hawcoat Park, with Ollie Watson, Richard Hart, Taylor Fagan, Jordan Lynch, Jack Preston and Roger Sharrock all the scoresheet, the latter netting twice.

Sam Johnston got the hosts’ only goal.

But stealing the show were Euxton Villa Reserves, who registered a 9-2 victory over Galgate.

Jacob Greenhalgh got a hat-trick, whilst Jake Greene and Sam Burton both scored twice.

Sam Keenan and Lewis Sullivan were also on target in the win, whilst Jake Swarbrick got both of Galgate’s goals.

Elsewhere, Jamie Hastings started and completed the scoring in Storeys’ 4-2 victory at AFC Blackpool Reserves, with Matthew Poole also scoring twice in the win.

A quickfire double early in the second-half had given the hosts hope, but they would ultimately fall to defeat.

Kendal United were however able to rescue points from behind, taking all three in a Marco Thompson and Jonny Voortman-inspired 2-1 win at Garstang Reserves, who had led early on through Luke Williams.

And last but certainly not least in our look at Division Two are Stoneclough, who picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Caton United, in which Jordan Clegg scored the only goal.

The high-scoring though continued in Division One Reserve, with no fewer than three teams hitting six on Saturday.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves fell behind on their way to a 6-1 over Coppull Reserves after Scott Hendy opened the scoring, but went on to secure the victory thanks to doubles from Brett Ferguson and Joey Richardson, and goals from Adam Whittaker and Phil Stokes.

Eagley Reserves triumphed by the same scoreline, with Zak Karanga-Brown and Jordan Hibbert both scoring twice in their side’s victory at Rossendale Reserves.

Tom Hopley and Rhys Hardie also netted in the win, whilst Owen Brighty got the hosts’ only goal of the game.

Meanwhile, Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves won 6-2 at Turton Reserves, with Olly Hesford scoring a hat-trick.

Steve McEwan, Luke Smith and Tommy Hanslip were also on target for the visitors, whilst Turton Reserves pulled a couple back late on through Andrew Lane and Dominion Quwam.

Elsewhere, the second of a Will Hockings brace helped Thornton Cleveleys Reserves beat CMB Reserves 3-2, with the winner coming in the 93rd minute.

Jake Mangan got the ball rolling for the eventual victors, who were pushed all the way thanks to a Harry Dixon double.

And Hurst Green Reserves won 3-1, with Christopher Scott, Joe Stead and Scott Craven all on target in a victory over Poulton Reserves, who saw their only goal scored by Will Donegani.

Lastly, onto Division Two Reserve, where Freckleton Reserves remain top of the table after a 5-1 win at Hesketh Bank Reserves.

Guillermo Marchant scored twice, whilst Samson Ogundaisi, Byron Fletcher and Callum Edgar also found the net in the victory.
The hosts’ only goal came via Jack Williams.

In fact, it’s largely as you were at the top of the division, with those at the top of the table all picking up maximum points.

Haslingden St Mary’s Reserves were pegged back twice, but would eventually secure a 3-2 win at Fulwood Amateurs A thanks to a Charlie Lord penalty, and goals from Zac Brierley and James Goodyear.

Dylan Jackson-Cooney and Malachi McDowell both temporarily brought their side level, the latter scoring from the spot, but the hosts were ultimately unable to hang on to a point.

Chipping Reserves had a slightly more straightforward afternoon, winning 4-0 against Thornton Cleveleys A thanks to goals from Peter Coupe, Anthony Slater, Oscar Middlesbrough and Henry Harrison.

Milnthorpe Corinthians Reserves won 3-1 at Lytham Town Reserves, with Dab Nowell, Tom Jackson and Charlie Morton getting on the scoresheet, whilst Croston Sports Reserves went one better, triumphing 4-1 at Storeys Reserves.

The hosts initially took the lead through Tom Charlson, before goals from Ewan Cheetham, John Sharples, Niall Maloney, along with an own goal, completed a comprehensive comeback.

And signing off this edition of the round-up in style are Carnforth Rangers Reserves, who won 5-0 away at Rossendale A thanks to a Josh Hadwin hat-trick, and goals from Igor Galhoa and Robert Lawson.
