Hollings keen to end revolving door at Slyne

Slyne with Hest boss Eric Hollings is looking ahead to the future after a number of new players arrived at Bottomdale Road, writes ROSS CHAPMAN.

The Division One side have enjoyed some decent results of late but lost 3-0 at home to Kendal United on Saturday.

Joe Dodds, Marco Thompson and Matt Kennedy got the goals for Kendal United, who remain in fifth.

As for Slyne with Hest, they sit bottom of the division but are just two points from safety.

Speaking on yesterday’s game, Hollings said: “Unfortunately, we just didn't turn up for the first quarter of an hour.

“We played like we were still in bed and they took two early goals and we were sloppy.

“For the majority of the match, we cancelled each other out and it was only late on in the game when they got the third goal to kill it off.

“The pitch didn't help, we battered our pitch last week so this week it wasn’t in the best condition and it wasn’t the prettiest of games.

“We held our own for most of the game and the way we started is just a shame.”

In his second full season in charge after his previous club King George FC folded, Hollings has a new group of players he can call upon, with eight lads joining in the last couple of weeks alone.

We needed to strip the squad and start again really, so I got a lad I know called Joe Sanderson - he came in and basically put us a squad together and to be fair he’s done a really good job.

“He’s on a dual registration with us so he’s helping out a bit here and playing elsewhere.

“It’s been a big adjustment for a lot of these lads because it’s a case of getting to know each other.

“For the majority of the season, we haven’t really had a recognised striker, that’s been the downfall.

“We’ve recently got a couple of lads who can be more comfortable up top so results have started to improve.

“We were getting beaten by seven or eight goals last season and, this year, we’ve just been in games a lot more and only losing by the one goal in most matches.”

The aim for Hollings this season is clear, and there’s a couple of exciting things on the horizon for 2026/27.

We want to stay in the division, that’s the aim now.

“Ultimately now, the lads who have come in will be the last for this season.

“We're looking to get a reserve team for next year and we've been approached by a couple of teams who want to come to us as a reserve team.

“We have got a squad of young lads already so I dare say some of our lads can drop into that and help them and vice versa.

“Hopefully next season it will be a decent set-up with our first team and reserves and we're recruiting some management now to help run everything.”

Elsewhere in Division One, leaders Hesketh Bank were made to work hard against local rivals Croston Sports as they edged ever closer to promotion with a 1-0 win.

Croston are the only team to take points off Hesketh Bank on their own patch this season and pushed the table toppers all the way at Westhead Road.

Kevin Edgar hit the bar with a free kick on five minutes and then fizzed a left-foot strike inches wide as the away side shaded a first half short on quality but full of endeavour on a tacky surface.

Cal Edgar saved with his feet from Croston’s only notable chance of the half as both sides went in at the break level.

Hesketh Bank continued to look the more threatening going forward, sub Lewis Johnson striking the post and Steve Bolton, in the Croston goal, making a remarkable reflex save to divert a deflected strike on to the bar.

With the clock ticking down into the final 10 minutes, George Bond finally broke the deadlock firing home from 10 yards after weaving his way past two defenders.

Isaac Hayes could have levelled immediately but failed to take advantage of Aidan Johnson’s slip to fire wide when one-on-one with keeper Edgar.

Big brother Kevin had a goal ruled out for offside and Hayes spurned the chance for a dramatic equaliser with the final attack of the match as the points went back up the A59.

Carnforth Rangers stunned Freckleton in a 9-3 victory as they continue to play catch up - they still have a number of games in hand on teams above them.

Joe Jobling got a hat trick for Carnforth with Joe Wilkinson (2), Cameron Holmes (2), Stan Rich and Alex Bates also finding the net.

Chipping are another team with a lot more games still yet to play and their part in the top five race is far from over after their 6-3 win over Lytham Town.

They produced a fantastic comeback after Lytham went 3-0 up inside 14 minutes through Jimmy McPhee and Billy Bould (2).

Harris Bailey got one back before the break and Chipping’s ruthless second half display featured another four for Bailey and one from Connor Wylie.

Second placed Kendal County defeated Crooklands Casuals 4-2 in a clash of the Cumbrians.

Ryan Close, Cammy Khan (2) and Ruben Swallow got Kendal County’s goals while Kyle Delves scored twice for Crooklands.

Pause United kept up with them after a 4-0 win over Askam United: Tom Knight, Jack Preston (2) and Ben Roberts were on the scoresheet.

In the Premier Division, the top two both got big wins: Lostock St Gerards saw off Whitehaven 7-0.

Reece Thompson, Isaac Loftus (2), Jack Shields, Craig Ronald, Charlie Markland and Josh Sarda all scored for LSG.

Top of the table Eagley remain near perfect at home following a 4-1 win against Coppull United.

Finlay Stafford’s first half double put the league leaders in a comfortable position but Liam Hardman pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half.

However, Daniel Fairhurst and Kieran Lomax tucked away efforts later in the half to make it a fairly straightforward afternoon for Neil Hart’s side.

In Division Two, Mill Hill stunned second-placed Stoneclough with a thumping 6–1 win.

Callum Newton scored twice in the first half, either side of Sam Holden’s strike and, at the time, a goal from Jordan Wignall that halved the deficit.

Connor Gilgun and Matthew Bulcock (2) added a further three for Mill Hill after the break to deny Stoneclough from going just one point behind leaders Fulwood Amateurs Reserves.

Langho continued their strong run of form with a 5-1 victory over Hawcoat Park.

After starting the second half 1-0 down thanks to Max Winder’s 38th-minute goal, Langho produced a five-star display in the remaining 45, with George Hutchinson, Joel Phelps, Jacob Simpson, Tomas Southern and Harry Exell all getting in on the goalscoring act.

Euxton Villa Reserves came out the right side of an eight-goal thriller as they beat Thornton Cleveleys Reserves 5-3.

Billy Cartmell and Ethan Brough gave Thornton a two-goal lead but Thomas Hemderson’s double sent the sides in at the break two apiece.

Henderson secured his hat trick midway through the second half before David Prout grabbed a fourth for his side and an own goal went in Euxton Villa Reserves’ favour.

In Reserve Division One, second placed Lostock St Gerards Reserves applied huge pressure on leaders Hesketh Bank Reserves with a 2-1 win that leaves them a point behind with two games in hand.

Elsewhere, Coppull United Reserves edged past Poulton Reserves 4-3 and Haslingden St Mary’s Reserves beat CMB Reserves 4-1.

As for Reserve Division Two, leaders Hurst Green Reserves saw off Stoneclough Reserves 3-2 thanks to a late David Bowlin goal and Pause Reserves secured a 4-1 win at Milnthorpe Corinthians Reserves.

There was plenty of cup action on Saturday too. In the third round of the Richardson Cup, Tempest United saw off a determined Fulwood Amateurs Reserves of two divisions below 5-2.

Charlie Ridge’s hat trick saw Haslingden St Mary’s defeat Millom 3-0 while Blackpool Wren Rovers won 4-0 at home to Astley & Buckshaw.

It was goals galore in the first round of the Presidents Cup. Poulton beat Rossendale 6-3 in large part due to a flurry of first half goals.

CMB beat Turton 4-0, Charnock Richard Reserves won 5-2 at Appley Bridge and Milnthorpe Corinthians progressed past Ulverston Rangers 2-1.

Finally, in the only Stewart Rowe Memorial Cup clash, Chipping Reserves made it to the second round after a 3-2 win over Hesketh Bank Reserves.
