Association of Northern Counties FA Senior Cup Competition

By Chris Wight

Lancashire FA v West Riding FA.

Charnock Richard, representing the Lancashire FA, met the West Riding FA who were represented by Leeds City, of the West Yorkshire League, in the final of the Association of Northern Counties Senior Cup competition at The County Ground, Leyland.
The first half was goalless but Charnock created most of the goal chances with the visiting goal keeper Declan Flowers thwarting the home forwards on several occasions. Charnock faced the wind and the rain in the second half but upped their game accordingly whilst Leeds saw too many of their through balls run out for goal kicks. Damain Dashti had a great chance to put Charnock ahead at the back post but hit his shot well wide of a gaping goal. Ross Bain then saved Charnock when he got back to dispose Hochstasser in the penalty area when he burst clear. Charnock finally scored on 62 minutes when Alex Porter was brought down as he raced into the penalty area. He got up to hit a great free kick over the wall into the top corner of the net. Leeds City then had their best spell of the game but failed to breach the home defence. The game was won when a Porter centre from the left was palmed out by Flowers onto the head of Carl Grimshaw who calmly headed it back into the net. There was still time for Flowers to make an impressive save to a powerful Carl Grimshaw penalty. The trophy returned into the custardy of the Lancashire FA after West Riding FA won it last season.
