Mort quadruple kills off Wrens and Rossendale return to league action in style

On a weekend that saw the two Premier Division title challenges fail to win, it was eighth-placed Hurst Green who impressed the most with their 6-2 away victory over third-placed Blackpool Wren Rovers, writes THEO HEWSON-BETTS.

Danny Mort scored four of the goals for the away side with Reece Rhodes and James Wolfenden also bagging.

Ric Seear and Harvey Walford did their best to get the home side back into the game, but their efforts were in vain.

Southport Hesketh’s game against Burscough Richmond was postponed so Turton were given the opportunity to move away from the bottom-placed team when they welcomed table-topping Thornton Cleveleys.

The match ended in a draw, Kieron Sisson scoring for the home team and Oliver Wilkinson bagging Thornton’s equaliser.

Euxton Villa are the team competing with Thornton at the apex of the division, but they failed to capitalise on their rivals’ dropped points, falling to a 1-0 loss at home to Tony Hesketh's Fulwood Amateurs (pictured above), Ryan Charnley getting the only goal.

Tempest United recovered from their disappointing loss to Southport Hesketh last week to beat Slyne with Hest 4-1 away from home.

Joel Shorthouse, Matthew Davies, Aaron Thorpe and Tom Booth got the goals for the winning side, with Josh Draycott’s 66th-minute penalty goal serving as nothing but a consolation for Slyne.

Elsewhere, CMB and Lytham Town played out a 2-2 draw. Callum Cornes putting CMB ahead in 14 minutes before Danny Scarlett responded in kind, Dan Crook bagged what looked like CMB’s winner in the 55th minute but Kian Kelly scored in injury time to grab a point for Lytham.

Poulton and Max Landless put in another good performance to defeat Vickerstown 3-1.

Landless scored twice alongside Angelo Karadzhinor for the home team in a game that saw four goals in a 10 minute spell either side of the break. Lee Miller got Vickerstown’s goal in the 46th minute.

Finally in the Premier Division, Whitehaven Amateurs moved further away from the bottom two with their 2-2 draw with Coppull United, Owen Woodburn and Tom Powell’s goals being cancelled out by Coppull’s duo of Alessio de Grassi and Jonty Matlock.

In Division 1 Hesketh Bank were the big winners of the weekend, moving up to third place with a 4-1 battering of second-placed Eagley.

Callum Edgar got the first goal for the home side before Bailey Wallace equalised for Eagley in the 35th, but a Kevin Edgar double, as well as a goal from Richard Burns, ensured that Hesketh moved up to fourth position, only three points shy of Eagley.

A Sean Allerton double ensured that Lostock St Gerards came from behind to notch all three points against Crooklands Casuals.

Ryan Rodgers had opened the scoring for Crooklands in the first half but Allerton’s goals ensured that the home team stay second-bottom of Division 1, with only three points from 12 games.

Croston Sports got a 2-2 draw with Askam United, Isaac Hayes bagging a brace for Croston to move them within one point of their opponents, who are currently sat in eighth place.

Croston’s draw was enough to see them put daylight behind themselves and Ulverston Rangers, who couldn’t defeat Kendal County at home.

Kendal had notched only six points from 10 games going into this gameweek and were in real danger of being stuck in 13th place for the foreseeable future, but the 0-0 draw this weekend between the two teams will have given Kendal hope that they can push on.

With Rossendale featuring in the cup last weekend, there was an expectation that their return would mark another big victory, and so it proved with their 12-0 decimation of Cartmel & District.

Tom Hartley scored five, Simon Nagle got three and Scott Wylie and Tom Hulme both got doubles to put Rossendale’s goal difference up to 52 after only 10 games.

Carnforth Rangers were also in fine scoring form, putting six past Galgate.

Galgate have only won three points this season and this result won’t be encouraging for them.

Stanley Rich, Damian Murphy and Joe Wilkinson got one each for Carnforth with Cameron Holmes completing his hat-trick with only three minutes left to play.

Zac Hatton scored for Galgate to prevent the game from being a whitewash, but it was much too little too late for the visitors.

Garstang missed the opportunity to accelerate away from the bottom two when they lost 3-1 to Dalton United.

Robert Baker had put Dalton ahead within three minutes, Frazer Shand added one before the half-hour mark and Gareth Jones’ penalty ended things, despite Freddie Mason converting from the spot to get Garstang on the scoresheet at the very least.

Walney Island beat Chipping 2-0 thanks to goals from Joe Pearson and James Bailey, a win which moved them closer to Kendal United, who weren’t in league action this week.

Freckleton lost 3-2 to Burnley United despite goals from James Jenson and Jack Williams whilst Furness Rovers eased past Storeys by three goals to one.

Jordan Chubb opening the Furness account early on before Max Green added another before the break.

Liam Jackson tried to make this competitive with his 50th-minute goal but Joe Bradbury scored immediately afterwards to put the game out of Storeys’ reach.

There were no games in Division 1 Reserve this week, with Horwich St Marys Victoria Reserves’ game with Burscough Richmond Reserves being postponed.

There was action in Division 2 Reserve though, with Haslingden St Marys reserves beating Lytham Town Reserves 3-0 thanks to two goals from Henry Hindle and a George Brown sweetener.

In Stewart Rowe Memorial Cup action, Coppull United Reserves, Galgate Reserves, Hurst Green Reserves, Euxton Villa Reserves, Stoneclough Reserves, Turton Reserves, Blackpool Wren Rovers reserves and Croston Sports Reserves were all victorious, whilst Kendal United triumphed 2-1 in their Westmorland Senior Cup first-round tie against Sedbergh/Dent.

Walney’s weird away record, Bibby’s treble keeps Euxton in hunt and awesome Yawson scores four With Thornton Cleveleys not in league action this weekend, Euxton Villa had a great opportunity to put their title rivals under the cosh with a victory over Lytham Town, writes THEO HEWSON-BETTS.
