Super Stoneclough fly flag in LFA Amateur Shield domination

By Andy Sykes

The West Lancashire League will have three teams in the semi-finals of the Lancashire Amateur Shield after a day to remember - writes THEO HEWSON-BETTS, with pictures from Slyne-with-Hest v Wyre Villa courtesy of DERICK THOMAS.

Stoneclough were victorious in their local derby match-up against Atherton Town.

A pair of efforts from Mark Truffas, one of which was a penalty that he won himself, was enough to get the win and advance his side into the next round, though a late Atherton penalty - which was scored at the second time of asking after the referee ordered a re-take due to the ‘keeper stepping off his line - ensured that the atmosphere was kept as tense as possible until the official blew the final whistle.

Slyne With Hest completed a wonderful comeback to win their game against Wyre Vila.

Slyne were 2-1 down with 20 minutes remaining in the match, but came back to win it 3-2 and advance to the last four.

Fulwood Amateurs shocked last year's Lancashire FA Amateur Shield victors, St Helens, by smashing them 4-0.

A double from Lucas Weaver and goals for substitutes Aaron Hewitt and Ryan Dodd rounded-off the home side’s good work.

St Helens picked up a late red card for good measure.

Vickerstown were the only side in the league to be knocked out of the competition, defeated 4-1 by Rochdale Sacred Heart.

The cup is competed for by Step 7 teams in the football pyramid across Lancashire.

Premier Division: Whitehaven stretch gap to bottom three

Whitehaven Amateurs won a vital game against Turton to move further away from the Premier Division’s bottom three.

The match ended in a 2-0 win for the away side, with Mal Holiday’s penalty combining with the goal of Bobby Carter to move Whitehaven five points clear from their opponents on the day, Turton.

CMB narrowly beat last-place Southport Hesketh. Dan Crook and Ben Thornton tying up the win despite Elliott Simms’ 77th-minute goal.

Tom Divver scored a late winner for Hurst Green to keep them battling for second-place. His goal added to a James Wolfenden double as the best attempts of Jordan Bentham and Cameron Murphy were rendered irrelevant.

James Sidebottom also bagged a late winner. His 89th-minute goal gave Lytham Town a 2-1 win over Poulton.

Danny Scarlett had put Lytham ahead just after the break before Max Landless’ netted the equaliser. Poulton thought that a point was surely in the bag before Sidebottom’s effort.

Tempest United managed a great point against table-topping Thornton Cleveleys.

Liam Rice and Jordon Coop scoring for Tempest, either side of an Adam Heaney double. The result saw Thornton extend their lead over second-placed Euxton Villa to 12 points, though Euxton have three games in hand.

Division 1: Late winner needed? Dom’s on the case!

Dom Case was the hero for Lostock St Gerards as his 85th-minute goal saw his side triumph over Hawcoat Park.

Hawcoat took the lead through Jack Milburn in the first minute and, after Jordan Wignall’s equaliser 13 minutes later, the lack of goals suggested that Hawcoat might hold on for a point.

Alas, Dom Case was there to nick a winner and move his team to within two points of their opponents.

Eagley beat Ulverston Rangers 3-1, despite being 1-0 down at the break. Jordan McGarry’s first-half penalty had handed Ulverston the advantage before Bailey Wallace’s second-half double, and a goal from Jordan Hibbert, saw Eagley emerge victorious.

Millom beat Croston Sports 2-1 away from home. Jamie Pattinson and Ben McDonald scored for the visiting side, with Ryan Smith’s goal for Croston sandwiched between them.

Haslingden St Marys beat Crookslands Casuals 2-0. Lewis Hanley and Jack Cain netting for the winning team.

Hesketh Bank beat league leaders Milnthorpe Corinthians in a narrow, 1-0 victory, Kevin Edgar’s 75-minute hit being the difference-maker.

A clash at the bottom of the table ended 2-2, with Horwich St Marys Victoria and Kendal County sharing the rewards of a well-fought game.

Division 2 - Four shots of Bailey’s sink Storeys

James Bailey scored four goals in Walney Island’s 6-0 demolition of Storeys. Zach Walker was joined by an unfortunate own goal in making up the rest of the goalscoring numbers.

Garstang won 5-1 against Dalton United. Robbie McMurdo’s penalty for the visitors was not enough to overrule the goals of Luke Williams, Jake Salisbury, Ric Tomlinson (2) and Owen Pye.

Damian Murphy’s double helped Carnforth Rangers to see off a challenge from Galgate. Aaron Helliwell did his best to reply but Louie Cooper’s strike with one minute left to play took the game out of reach.

Freckleton managed to hold on to win in their game against Kendal United. Macaulay Hopkins and Samson Ogandaisi scored in the first half for the home side, but Bailey Kenny’s goal in the second period kept the game finely balanced until the final whistle went.

There was plenty of late drama in the game between Chipping and Burnley United. Niall Edmondson scored early in the second half for Burnley before Luke Conti bagged what Chipping must have felt sure was an important point with his late equaliser. But Joe Rodriguez then won the game for Burnley in the 94th-minute.

Division 1 Reserve - Wren Rovers fly high in bird-battle win

Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves soared past Eagley Reserves this weekend with a huge 6-1 win. Ellis Wilson scored a brace for the visiting team, with Henry Wright, Steve McEwan, Connor Taafe and Olly Hesford also netting. Owen Heyworth got one back for Eagley, who are still grounded at the bottom of the division.

CMB Reserves also got a high scoring win, this time over Burscough Richmond reserves. Danny Halloran scored twice, with Obi Ebizie and Mark Waring both bagging in quick succession to make the scoreline starker than it would otherwise have been.

Thornton Cleveleys Reserves beat Fulwood Amateurs Reserves, despite going behind to a Hugo Strand effort in the first quarter of the game. Two quickfire efforts from Josh Wood and Tommy Dollin before the break saw Thornton leave Fulwood as 2-1 winners.

Euxton Villa Reserves managed a 2-0 win over Horwich St Marys Victoria thanks to goals from Nick Buckley and Sean Elliott.

Division 2 Reserve - Richardson triple sees off Galgate

Lee Richardson scored three in Coppull United Reserves’ 3-1 win over Galgate Reserves. Aaron Cartwright’s 88th-minute goal proving to be nothing more than a consolation for the away side.

Wyre Villa Reserves convincingly beat Chipping Reserves, scoring four goals with no return thanks to the sharp shooting of Ben Cecil - who scored twice - as well as Ryan Yates and Rob Norton.

Cole Holt scored a last-minute equaliser to win Carnforth Rangers Reserves a point against Fulwood Amateurs A.

His goal in the twilight of the match ensured Ben Turton’s first half efforts were not in vain. Matthew Billington and Jamie Lynch would have been left slightly disappointed that their goals were not enough for three points.
