Charnock Richard

By Chris Wight

David Jones, Secretary of Charnock Richard passed away, on Monday, 18th June 2012.

After suffering a period of ill health, David passed away peacefully in Chorley Hospital on Monday 18th June 2012. with his family at his side. He was aged 65.

His funeral takes place at Charnock Richard Parish Church on Wednesday 27th June.

Born and raised in Preston, David joined the RAF as an engineer and was based in Bahrain and latterly at Holyhead. He then worked for the Lancashire Evening Post, British Empire, Heskin Fabrication and finally Dislok UK. He enjoyed playing golf and was captain at Ingol Golf Club. He also enjoyed cycling, as part of the Preston Wheelers and loved to play darts an dominoes.

In 1990, he became involved in Charnock Richard Football Club, having merely been a spectator before then. When the manager of one of the junior teams quit, he volunteered to help out in the short term and never stuck to that promise! He ran several junior teams throughout the years, coaching many players and providing football for a huge number of local kids. He joined the junior committee and helped to run the section, before becoming Secretary and later Chairman of the section.

He had also joined the senior committee in this time, helping the club during one of it's largest projects to date in the development of its facilities. He took on the role of Secretary, working in close partnership with his best pal Graham Randle. He would make sure everything was done to near perfection, keeping accurate records of all that took place and could be relied on to provide endless banter during the committee's Tuesday morning 'boot room' get together.

During his relatively short time as Secretary at Charnock he became highly regarded for his commitment and support to both the Club and the League and received the Leagues' Secretary of the year award at the recent League annual presentation

David was a devoted husband to Barbara, wonderful dad to Bethan, Gareth and Niall and also a doting Grandad to Morgan, Grace, Isabella and Lauren. He took his children's partners James, Alison and Carrianne in as his own. He was a loving brother to Sylvia and the late Jean and a considerate son-in-law to Isabel. Nothing was ever too much for him to do and would do anything for anyone. He leaves a huge void for his family friends and football club to fill and will be sorely missed by all.
